Cookbook Junkie
I am a recovering cookbook junkie. I admit it. At one time, I probably had 50 cookbooks, and I just kept buying them. One day, in a fit of decluttering, I gave away about half of them. I’ve learned to resist, but it’s hard.
But there are a few I would never part with for anything, and I want to share those with you today.
Yes, I’m a Southern girl. And Southern Living’s “Homestyle Cooking” is one of my favorite cookbooks. I refer to it frequently. The first chapter, called “Taste of the South,” takes me back to the food I grew up loving, including fried catfish, black-eyed peas, cornbread and peach cobbler. The desserts are to die for. There’s even a chapter on healthy homestyle cooking.
“How To Cook Without a Book” by Pam Anderson (no, she’s not THAT Pam Anderson) is another favorite. It’s not so much a collection of recipes, but instead easy cooking techniques which will allow you to come up with a decent meal when you can’t decide what to make for dinner.
“Through the Years” by Sara Spano is not a cookbook you’re likely to find at Barnes and Noble. Published in 1985, it was written by Mrs. Spano, who was then the Food Editor at the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer in
Columbus, GA. I was a reporter there for a while, and it was a joy to get to know Mrs. Spano. When I asked her the best way to prepare cornbread dressing for my husband-to-be at Thanksgiving, she told me to buy it a Kirven’s (a local tearoom), spoon it into my dish and call it my own! “Through the Years is full of Southern favorites you’re not likely to find anywhere else.
