Costco and the Likes
Bulk buying at the warehouse stores can be a help when you’re trying to cook quick and easy, but you can certainly get carried away and buy too much. It goes bad, and you feel even worse as you see dollars literally going into the trash. I’ve found a few products, though, that seem to last forever. And they’re so very convenient.
I love salads, but it always seems like the lettuce from the grocery turns brown in just a couple of days. But when I buy the package of six heads of romaine from Costco – at a fabulous price – it stays fresh forever. And the plastic box of organic spinach in my refrigerator right now is going on two weeks. It’s so easy to put together a quick spinach salad by adding dried cranberries and bleu cheese crumbles. (Maytag bleu cheese at a pricey $16 per pound is my weakness; my husband gives it to me for Valentine’s Day.)
So, the question is: do the warehouse stores get better greens than the neighborhood grocery? I don’t know, but a lot of chefs seem to shop there, so I’m guessing they know something I don’t.
We also like the frozen baguettes. I pop them in the microwave for a minute on defrost. Then ten minutes in a 400 degree oven, and you have delicious fresh bread. I also like to get the huge bags of Pillsbury frozen biscuits to keep in the freezer. Being a Southern girl, I’m always up for biscuits, slathered with butter and jelly or tucked up with ham.
The large salt and pepper grinders found in the spices section are handy to keep on your counter.
Moral of the story? Don’t pass up the warehouse stores, but know your prices
